The contemporary ballet company being the first non-state sponsored dance company in Turkey is now celebrating it's 39th anniversary. Company was founded by Cem Ertekin and Nildan Atsiz on June 1972 and gave the first performance "Beginning" at the venue of Kadikoy Community Training Centre Hall. Company performed within the amateur branch activities of Istanbul Municipality State Theatre during years 1979 and 1980 and then ender the umbrella of Istanbul Municipality Conservatory between 1980 and 1986. in 1986, Istanbul Municipality Conservatory was attached to the Istanbul University, hence the company continued performing as the dance company of the University. In September 1990, the company was reestablished as a totaly independent private dance group. Contemporary Ballet Company is the first organization celebrate International Dance Day in Turkey in 1985 and since then continued to celebrate every year on April 29. Company also organized a special event on 1990 under the name of "Contemporary Ballet Performances- Turkish Choreographers" for the first time in turkey and this event repeated every year on June and became a traditional event for the company. Company dancers were awarded with the first prize, in the Kazakhstan International Ballet Competition in 1991 with the "Pas de deux" they performed. ( Music by Andrew L.Webber and Choreography by Cem Ertekin) Company is active since 1972 without and financial support from any organization. Since then presented more than 200 classical, demi-classical and modern choreographies. Most of the repertory are original and choreographed by Cem Ertekin. Some of the performances are, 1972- Death and the Young Man, 1974- Hamlet, 1978- Carmina Burana, 1979- The Rite of Spring, 1980- Ferhat and Sirin, 1981- Romeo and Juliet, 1984-Giselle, 1989- La Sylphide, 1990- Equinoxe, 1991- The Phantom of the Opera, 199-Zorba, 2000- Tripling- Litany, Last Memories from the Saravaggio, 2001- Tango Ballet, 2002- Medea, 2003- Talk to Her... During the last 39 years, more than 200 dancers has gained experience at the Contemporary Ballet Company and majority of them had the opportunity of dancing for the State Ballet Companies in Turkey and various dance companies abroad. |
